A critical factor to consider when developing specifications for electrical equipment is the range of environments in which the equipment will be operating in. Not only is this understanding important in maximizing the performance, reliability, and life of the equipment but even more essential in ensuring the safety of those handling, manufacturing, operating, or maintaining the equipment.

Electric and electronic equipment deteriorate or malfunction when water or dust enters the device. The IEC has developed the ingress protection (IP) ratings, which grade the resistance of an enclosure against the intrusion of dust or liquids. The ratings are widely used throughout industry.

The IP (Ingress Protection) rating of motors indicates their degree of protection against intrusion of solid objects and liquids. The IP rating is composed of two digits. The first digit represents protection against solid objects, while the second digit represents protection against liquids.

IP ratings, or Ingress Protection ratings, are a standardized system used to classify and communicate the level of protection that an electrical device or enclosure provides against the intrusion of foreign objects (like dust and debris) and moisture (such as water) based on specific testing criteria. IP ratings are important to understand when selecting devices for use in various environments, especially in situations where protection against environmental factors is crucial, like outdoor or industrial settings.

A motor with an IP rating is assured to work well in environments that are constantly wet and with particles in the air.

Professionals can select the right motor because motors that work best are designed for different water conditions.

It ensures that these failures, which can be costly, don’t happen because of poor seals or ineffective usage.

IP ratings make it easy for users and manufacturers to know where the motor can open and remain safe.

The IP rating provides more details on how the motor is protected from its operating environment. For instance, certain IP ratings signify that an electric gear motor has more protection against water, whereas others are more geared toward dust and foreign particles. Thus, on the basis of the rating, one can make an informed choice to maximize the lifespan of an AC electric motor.

IEC Standard Motors Explained for Buyers

NEMA stands for National Electrical Manufacturers Association, which develops standards for electrical equipment to ensure safety, performance, and operability. IEC stands for International Electrotechnical Commission, which prepares and publishes international standards for electrical, electronic and related technologies.

IEC standard motors comply with international standards set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). These standards define precise requirements for the design, performance and safety of electric motors. This standardization ensures that engines are compatible and meet the same quality requirements worldwide, facilitating global trade and use.

Since 2014, the power range was extended for electric motors and was set between 0,12 kW and 1000 kW. Moreover, electric motors with a rated output of 0,75-375 kW must meet either IE3 efficiency or IE2 if fitted with VSD’s since 2017. The IEC standards were established in 2008, they are classified as E1, IE2, IE3, IE4 and IE5.

In 2020, the point was reached where countries consuming 76% of the global electricity consumption by electric motor systems have set MEPS for motors at either IE2 or IE3 level. This is a high level of international alignment for a globally traded product, recognizing at the same time that MEPS can differ according to the market situation of individual countries or regions. The barriers to trade are reduced through the transparent nomenclature and definitions of the IE-code (MEPS levels at IE2 / IE3 / IE4).

The focus on motor efficiency has shifted from the product "motor" to the "Electric Motor Driven System" which is the system consisting of the motor control with a variable frequency converter, the motor itself, the mechanical equipment and the driven application (pump, fan, compressor, etc.).

IEC 61800-9-2, edition 1, 2017 was published as a test standard and an efficiency classification for converters. The Group Efficiency Standard IEC 61800-9-1 defines the interface between the electrical and the mechanical part of the EMDS. In IEC 60034-2-3, 2020 a test method was published for motors driven by converters.
Also, in IEC TS 60034-30-2, 2016 an efficiency classification for motors driven by converters was published.

The IEC standards were created many decades ago to standardize the manufacture of electrical components and equipment throughout Europe, and the majority of countries have since adopted them. With electric motors identified as one of the primary consumers of energy worldwide, IEC's standards for electric motors have recently developed, focusing on energy efficiency. They also cover diverse aspects such as motor voltage, frame size, mounting type, hazardous area classification, and more.

The most common IEC standard you'll come across is IEC 60034, which classifies asynchronous AC squirrel-cage induction motors (the most popular type of motor worldwide) based on their efficiency. This standard is the driver in energy-efficiency legislation during the last decade, with the IE3 'Premium' classification now mandatory in many European countries for new motors up to 1000 kW.
