What type of motor should be used for packaging machinery?

Packaging machinery seems to be diverse, but the motors used inside are actually just a few types. Choosing the right one makes the equipment run smoothly with fewer malfunctions. Choosing the wrong one results in either jamming or shutdown. This article discusses the motor selection for packaging machinery from the perspective of our factory, which has been manufacturing motors for 35 years.

Common types of motors used in packaging machinery

Different packaging processes have different requirements for motors.

The most commonly used type is the three-phase asynchronous motor. Machines like filling machines, sealing machines, labeling machines, and conveyor belts do not require frequent starting and stopping, nor do they need very precise speed control. A standard IEC aluminum shell motor is sufficient. The power is generally not large, ranging from 0.37KW to 3KW, which is the choice for most customers.

Brake motors are used in positions that require rapid stopping. Ordinary motors have a large inertia and will drift if they slide past. Adding a brake allows for precise positioning. These types of equipment mostly use brake motors ranging from 0.2KW to 1.5KW.

Variable frequency motors are used in situations where the speed needs to be frequently adjusted. For example, a filling machine may fill water bottles today with a fast flow rate and thick syrup tomorrow with a slow flow rate. The motor speed needs to change accordingly. By changing the operating frequency of the variable frequency motor, the running speed of the motor can be adjusted, thus achieving different running speeds for the motor depending on different demand scenarios.

Pay attention to these details when selecting the motor

The protection level should be sufficient. The packaging workshop is sometimes humid and sometimes dusty. For example, around a powder packaging machine, there is flour floating. At least an IP54 level is required. I have seen a factory that packages seasonings, and the motor kept breaking down. Later, they replaced it with a fully enclosed motor of IP55, and there has been no problem since then.

Installation location and space. Some packaging machines are stuffed full. After the motor is installed, there is no space for a hand to reach for heat dissipation. In such cases, choose a compact motor with flange installation or a right-angle output solution with the motor and reducer integrated. Also, check if the side of the motor fan is blocked. If it is blocked, heat dissipation will be ineffective.
